(Baron) Dominique Vivant Denon (1747–1825)

“Heads of Horses” (aka “Têtes de Chevaux”), 1797 (as inscribed on plate), plate 31, after a drawing by Jacques Courtois (aka Giacomo Cortese; le Bourguignon; il Borgognone) (1621–1675), most likely published in Paris in 1873 by A. Barraud in the two volume (large format) folio featuring 317 of the artist’s etchings and other others works with descriptions by Albert de la Fizelière, “L'Oeuvre Originale de Vivant Denon…” (see  https://0700polygraf.blogspot.com/2016/11/vivant-denon-ancien-directeur-general.html?m=1).

Etching on wove paper with generously wide margins.

Size: (sheet) 48 x 70.3 cm; (plate) 9.9 x 38.2 cm.

Numbered and inscribed on plate: (upper right) “31”; (lower left) “Dennon ft 1797”.

TIB 12101.321 (Petra ten-Doesschate Chu 1985, “The Illustrated Bartsch: French Masters of the Nineteenth Century: Dominique Vivant Denon”, vol. 121, Part 1 [Supplement], New York, Abaris Books, p. 260, cat. no. [12101].321).

Condition: strong and well-printed impression with wide margins in near pristine condition (i.e. there are no tears, holes, folds, abrasions, losses, stains, foxing or significant signs of handling).

I am selling this almost panoramic etching of seventeen heads of horses in different positions with sumptuously wide margins and in near pristine condition for AU$267 in total (currently US$190.86/EUR160.99/GBP146.11 at the time of posting this listing) including Express Mail (EMS) postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.

If you are interested in purchasing this large and boldly executed etching that is so rare that I have been unable to find another copy of it in any of the major museum collections, please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.
