The Handling of the Brush Examples of Foliage
('Lithograph in Sepia Ink')
('Lithograph printed in Colours')
Fine Sepia print from wood
Fine color print from wood
This plate 'The Handling of the Brush' printed in Sepia Ink
might be confused with prints from stone at the first glance
Neither the Swiss Waterfall nor the French Fontainebleau plate which served as frontispiece in 1855, resp. 1858 and 1861 are prints from stone
Only plate 6. DUGARRY.ARRAN was first printed from wood (1855) and since 1858 and 1861 printed from stone
cf. HOLMAN The ink is flat and not greasy thus differentiating these prints
from both intaglio and lithographic prints
Drawn and painted by George Barnard. Printed in the Leighton Bros. Chromatic Process.

Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Colours
Fine printed in colors from wood by George C. Leighton
cf. HOLMAN A color print from wood shows all the distinctive marks
of the wood cutting tools, whether they be knives or graves ,
and whether the cutting on the side of a planksoft wood
or the engraving obe on the end of the grain of fine boxwood.
The impressions of the relief printing will probably show on the reverse of the paper.
As each color will have been printed separately ,
slight imperfections in registration will be detected. Some colors will overlap,
while others will not quite meet.
Each color will be of a uniform depth of tone ,if printed
(not uneven as when put on by hand)
Designed by George Barnard. Executed in the Leighton Bros. Chromatic Process.

('Lithograph in colours')
Fine work printed in colors from wood
cf.
HOLMAN The first colored illustrations in a newspaper of the English language
(The Illustrated London News) appeared in 1855,
these were engraved by John Leighton, who produced much fine colored work from wood.
Metal plates, reversed so that they printed in relief
were often used in connnection with the wood engraving of these prints.
