Le sujet nous est connue par une ancienne inscription manuscrite sur l'exemplaire conservé à la bibliothèque Correr à Venise (Stampe, tome XIII, no.5).

S'il nous semble en effet possible de reconnaître la comtesse de Rosemberg dans la figure au bout de la table à droite (Roux, no.332),

nous n'avons pas encore su identifier les autres personnages. Giustiniana de Wynne n'avait pu épouser dans sa jeunesse le patricien Andrea Memmo.

Ajoutons qu'elle est la << Mlle X.C.V. >>, enceinte des oeuvres de Memmo, que Casanova entend, à Paris, faire avorter à sa manière avec l'aroph. Giustiniana,

assagie, finit par épouser sur le tard l'ambassadeur autrichien à Venise, le comte de Rosemberg.

Devenue veuve, elle entretient d'étroites relations avec le grand réformateur Angelo Querini, qui introduit Denon dans la société vénitienne et lui fait connaître Isabella Teotochi Marin.

Son salon, surtout à Padoue mais aussi à Venise, est fréquenté par une petite élite; elle-même est la seule femme recue dans celui d'Isabella.

Son secrétaire, confident et peut-être aussi amant est le comte Bartolomeo Benincasa, << confidente >> (espion) bénévole des inquisiteurs d'Etat,

à qui nous devons de nombreux et précieux rapports sur les opinions et agissements de Denon.

Nous présentons ici la suite des quatre états connus.

C'est tout d'abord une eau-forte pure, que de nombreux travaux à la pointe sèche et à la roulette,

puis un grainage d'aquatinte sont venus peu á peu obscurcir au point de rendre le jujet quasiment illisible.

Il s'agit, certes, d'un exercice de clair-obcscur comme nous en connaissons maints exemples dans son oeuvre.

Mais nous ne tenons que Denon entend aussi représenter, symboliquement,

la disparition du salon Rosemberg avec le décès de la comtesse qui s'éteint après une assez longue maladie, à Padoue, le 21 août 1791, à l'âge de cinquante-quatre ans.

C'est vraisemblablement la raison qui a conduit Denon, dans ses deux catalogues (Florence, 1793, et Paris , 1803),

à conserver l'anonymat de cette composition dont le sens échappait nécessairement aux non-Vénitiens.

I, elegante frontespizio figurato allegorico a ciascun volume dopo Gravelot, con 110 tavole a piena pagina di Le Mire, Lempereur, Flipart ed altri dopo Gravelot, Boucher, Cochin e Eisen, 97 cul-de-lamps, il tutto inciso in rame, legatura coeva in marocchino rosso, piatti inquadrati da cornice di triplice filetto, dorso a 5 nervi, tasselli in pelle con titolo e fregi, tagli dorati, sguardie marmorizzate, lievi mancanze, qualche graffio. Ex libris “M. Dupleix de Bacquencourt, Intendant d’Amiens” al contropiatto. Edizione pregevolissima in esemplare stampato su grand papier in prima tiratura con le remarques al verso delle tavole e con una tavola aggiunta al volume 5 di fronte a p. 49 ed appartenuto a Guillaume-Joseph Dupleix de Bacquencourt, intendente ad Amiens (1727-1794). Folio, 44 x 30 cm. 42 plates and plans, 26 are hand-colored aquatints. This copy with plates watermarked Whatman 1827 and 1828. Nearly all designs here were executed. Among the finest depictions of country seats of the period, this copy has earlier watermarks than J.R. Abbey's example, ABBEY LIFE 33. COLTON 195.1. "The plates executed in aquatint and hand colored, are among the most handsome in all cottage and villa design books. Each subject, depicted in view and plan, is skillfully integrated with surrounding foliage and distant landscape forms. This is accomplished through effects of light and shadow, conscientiously balanced relationships between natural and built objects, and in some cases a misty haze that creates an effect of atmospheric depth. COLTON p.526. "Lugar was a skillful practitioner of the picturesque, exploiting the fashion for `cottages ornes' and castellated Gothic mansions in the manner of John Nash." Internally fresh, very bright copy, entirely uncut. Modest extremity wear. Contemporary quarter navy morocco and marbled boards. Very good. Item #19628
