Jean Vatout (1791-1848):
Jean Vatout, born in Villefranche-sur-Saône on May 26th, 1791 and died in Claremont (England) on November 3rd, 1848, was a French Member of Parliament and man of letters.
Secretary of Boissy d'Anglas until 1814, Vatout was sub-prefect of Libourne during the Hundred Days, then sub-prefect of Semur-en-Auxois from 1819 to 1820. From 1822, he was part of the house Duke of Orleans with the title of librarian; he became the King's first librarian in 1832. According to a rumour, he was a natural son of Philippe-Égalité, and therefore a half-brother of Louis-Philippe. He appreciated the cheerfulness of his character and his Gallic songs. After 1830, he was Councillor of State, president of the Council of Civil Buildings, president of the commission of historic monuments (1837) and deputy of Semur from 1831 to 1848.
He encouraged the literary beginnings of Alexandre Dumas.
After several unsuccessful attempts, he was elected to the French Academy on January 6th, 1848. He followed in exile Louis-Philippe, at the castle of Claremont, in Surrey (spring 1848). The lead pipes of this castle being dilapidated, Vatout fell ill and died of poisoning by lead poisoning shortly after.
Charles Motte (1785-1836):
Charles Étienne Pierre Motte was a French lithographer and publisher, born in 1785 and died in 1836.
Charles Motte obtained his diploma allowing him to work as a lithographer and printer on October 31st, 1817.
The First complete Lithographic Book Incunabula (handwritten lithographicText&Crayon Lithograph Plate Illustrations) was printed in Paris 1816 by de Lasteyrie in only 50 copies.

He was also among the first printers to obtain it, as it was created that same year.
Romanticism’s taste for the macabre and for the theme of brevity of life prompted him to lithograph specific Renaissance engravings, such as those of Hans Baldung (Death and the Maiden). His business was located on Rue des Marais Saint-Germain in Paris.
He illustrated the heading of the liberal daily ‘Le Miroir des spectacles, des lettres, des mœurs et des arts’, where many lithographs of his composition (February 1821 - June 1823) were being reproduced.
In 1827, he persuaded the young Eugène Delacroix to illustrate the first French edition of Faust by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and was himself in charge of lithographing the plates and colouring them in watercolours.
He lithographed illustrations by Jean-Baptiste Mauzaisse (1784-1844) (portraits of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, of Napoleon, etc...), Victor-Jean Adam (‘Avènement de l'Empire’), Ludwig Rullmann (portraits of Maurice de Nassau and Maurice of Saxony), Hippolyte Bellangé (‘Entrée des Français à Milan’), Achille Devéria (1800-1857), Edmond Savouré (‘Vue de Saumur en 1836’), and Henry Monnier, etc...
Charles Motte is the stepfather of Achille Devéria (who married his daughter Celeste) and the grandfather of Egyptologist Theodule Charles Devéria and Sinologist Jean-Gabriel Devéria (1844-1899).
Charles Motte taught lithography to missionary Laurent Imbert, who imported it to China. Motte's lithographic workshop collaborated on the printing of the Egyptian Grammar by Champollion, but Charles Motte died in Paris on December 5th, 1836, shortly after the first part was printed.
Celeste Devéria took over from her father and obtained the lithograph printer diploma on December 14th, 1837.
