Nine of ten full-page plates reproducing (in reverse) a series of ink drawings which is now in the Louvre (Inv. 22903 to 22912), where they are catalogued as drawings in the manner of Rembrandt; the name of Gerbrandt van den Eeckhout has also been suggested. Caylus was an amateur etcher. He turned into prints many drawings in the collection of the Louvre. After the Introduction is a list of the ten plates. Titled at bottom, signed. I) 'Joseph raconte ses sognes', Joseph telling his dreams; signed at bottom: 'Rembrandt del. / C. Scul.', numbered on bottom right. II) 'Joseph est descendu dans la cisterne', Joseph in the cistern. III) 'Joseph est vendu á des marchands Ismaelites', Joseph being sold to an Ismaelite merchant. V) 'Chasteté de Joseph.', the chastity of Joseph. Caylus conceived this booklet as illustrated book to give an account on the life of Joseph. Some etchings are more successful than others, also considering Caylus' endless experimenting with the techninque. See for example plate nr. II: the darkest areas are in fact white here. Possibly something went wrong during the etching process. Pages and plates loose; cardboard binding loose and damaged. Foxing and smudges especially on the external margins. Etching and letterpress on paper. Plates: ca. 219 x 160 mm, total: 325 x 195 mm; brownings and tears along the most external margins; plates still in good condition; light foxing on margins of plates. Cohen, 210. 26] pp.First and only edition of a children's book beautifully illustrating the biblical story of Joseph and intended "as much for the improvement of morals as for the principles of drawing", as the title-page notes. Anne-Claude-Philippe comte de Caylus aimed to inspire his readers with a love of virtue and an appreciation of Rembrandt's masterly and evocative drawings. The original drawings have been in the Louvre since 1842, but they have lost their attribution to Rembrandt and are now sometimes ascribed to Rembrandt's pupil Gerbrand van den Eeckhout. The first recorded owner of the drawings was the painter Charles-Antoine Joseph Coypel, an acquaintance of the author.Owner's inscription on paste-down, binding chafed, spine damaged. Otherwise in good condition. A fine series of 10 etchings.l Cohen-de Ricci 210; STCN (4 copies); for Caylus: Lugt, Marques des Collections 2919.
