It is less often noted that he was also the sole provider of images for the earliest editions. He was apprenticed to the engraver Richard Cooper and in turn trained other engravers; he has been described as ‘the most influential Scottish engraver after Richard Cooper.’1 However, most of his output was for book illustration and his work is little known beyond the confines of book scholarship. Examining the sources and production of the plates for the Encyclopaedia, this article will highlight Bell’s contribution to the development of printmaking in Scotland in the 18th century. This paper emerged from a larger project, a research workshop project funded by the Royal Society of Edinburgh, investigating Scottish printmaking in the 18th century.
