Ignace-Joseph Chevalier de Claussin (1766-1844) after Rembrandt B.23 , W/B.23 , H.110 , B/B. 34-B
Self portrait (?) with plumed cap and lowered sabre. Etching and Drypoint 1634
131x107mm;5 3/16 x 4 3/16 inches
Signed and dated Rembrandt f 1634
Before Rembrandt pared this plate down to an oval ( the second state), it showed him standing imperiously, right hand on hip and left hand propped over the hilt of an upright sword.
His hat now bears a feather; his hair cascades in ringlets; his demeanor is smug; his chest is adored with the brass fixture of a cavalier. In just a few years' residency in the great port of Amsterdam, during what would become known as Holland's Golden Age, Rembrandt has become prosperous.

Though few compilers have agreed about the identity of this portrait.
Hind's idea that this may be a dramatic version by Rembrandt of himself seems the most
likely, given the date , 1634. The other suggestions are that it is Prince Adolphus of Gueldres (Middleton); Admiral van Dorp (Dr.Jan Six); and Joris de Caullery (Biörklund)
Münz, who thinks that Rembrandt used the same model in this etching as in the painting of
Samson threatening his father-in-law at Berlin, inclined to agree with Dr. Six's identification of the sitter.
This plate was initially a rectangular composition with Rembrandt holding a sabre
There is a painting of the same subject, formerly in the Seligmann Collection (K.d.K. 54)

Two volumes. Please note that the sale of the Rembrandt etchings was a two part sale. The details above refer to Part I. Part II details will follow. The reference number and price refer to BOTH volumes as a set. The boards for both are elegant, smart: green cloth covered boards with pressed gilt titling. The boards for Volume I are a little scuffed and a little worn about the edges from shelving. They are steady and sure. The papertrims have a scattering of foxing spots. The contents are pleasing. Tight, clean, clear, assiduous, very assured. "Part Two: Public Auction Tuesday and Wednesday April 30 and May 1 at 1:45 pm (1968)". The boards are as with the first volume. They have very light wear about the edges from shelving. The contents are most pleasing. Serene, bright, clean, clear, assiduous,
