Original Lithograph by DOMINIQUE VIVANT DENON (1747-1825) executed c.1816 or most probably earlier after the Fragonard père reverse brown Wash Drawing Study in His Cabinet Collection Denon first experimented since September 1809 during his Senefelder workshop visit in Munich with this new drawing on stone & printing from stone medium. Although this lithographed Fragonard's Sultan drawing does not appear in the 4 volumes Set of Monuments des Arts du Dessin etc. 1816 ( 307 plates) It survives in a few loose examples , suggesting that at some point the intention was to include it. The lithograph need not have been seen in the Monuments des arts du dessin, however, for the names of the maker and the collector of the drawing to have been known, the letter... On trouve plus facilement les vingt-cinq ou trente feuillesde portraits que Denon a lithographiés d'après plusieurs personnes de sa société, dans les dernières années de sa vie.

DROUOT PARIS SALE collection HELM&HELM sammlung <> Son caractère, son coeur, son esprit étaienet exclusivement faits de jeunesse et d'enthousiasme. Nous avons dit que Denon s'était préoccupé, dès l'origine , des ressources que la lithographie pouvait offrir aux artistes, au point de vue de la reproduction des oeuvres des maîtres. Après de nombreux essais il en était arrivé à prendre une décision importante. il résolut d'employer la lithographie, concurremment avec l'eau-forte, pour illustrer sa fameuse histoire générale des Beaux-Arts qui n'a jamais vu le jour. Dès sa retraite de la direction des musées, il se mit à l'oeuvre et il lithographia avec une ardeur toute juvénile les pièces principales de sa collection. Voici le relevé exact des planches qu'il avait terminées lorsque la mort interrompit son travail et priva la postérité d'un ouvrage dont le talent et le savoir de l'auteur nous garantissaient l'importance et l'utilité.
