..."Sébastien Cramoisy died in 1669 and was succeeded as Director of the Imprimerie Royale by his grandson,Sébastien Mabre-Cramoisy (1642-87).Under him the Press devoted much of its time to the production of the Cabinet du Roi , a series intended to leave no doubts in the mind of posterity of the greatness of Louis XIV .These volumes were,however,collections of plates ,rather than books,and the best examples of typography of this period are to be found among the smaller illustrated works.Benserade's Ovid with its charming vignettes (some by Sebastien LeClerc ,but majority by Francois Chauveau),clearly foreshadows the French illustrated book of the eighteenth century"...
